What is the Basic Economy of United Airlines?

United Airlines offers a fare option to its customers known as Basic Economy. This option is available on selected routes only, however, the standard United Economy fare option is available on all routes. This is the most affordable option of the airline and comes with most of the same inflight services and amenities that are available with standard Economy. What is the carry-on baggage allowance when a passenger buys a Basic Economy ticket?

For all basic economy passengers, they are allowed to carry one personal item that fits under the seat, such as a shoulder bag, purse, laptop bag. The item should not exceed limits of 9 inches x 10 inches x 17 inches (22 cm x 25 cm x 43 cm). Passengers are allowed to carry mobility aids and other assistive devices. Full-sized carry-on baggage is not allowed unless the passenger is a MileagePlus Premier member, a primary cardmember of a qualifying MileagePlus credit card or a Star Alliance Gold member.

What is the check-in process of Basic Economy tickets?

If the passenger is checking a bag, they will only be able to check-in for their flight through united.com or the United app. To check the bag, passengers can go to a check-in counter or designated kiosk in the airport lobby. If the traveler begins check-in and does not indicate about checking a bag, he/she will need to finish checking in for the flight at the airport.

Is pre-boarding still allowed for passengers who purchase Basic Economy and have a disability or require additional assistance?

Passengers with disabilities and passengers who need assistance are allowed to pre-board at the aircraft, even if they are traveling with a basic economy ticket.

Can a passenger change his/her Basic Economy ticket?

No, this is one of the few restrictions that tickets of the basic economy can’t be changed once the booking process is complete. However, according to the 24-hour flexible booking policy of the airline, passengers can cancel a reservation for 24 hours after purchase as long as the passenger completed his/her purchase one week or more before the original scheduled departure of the flight.
